miragel: DOUBLE POST - FROM 1up.com

It's time for another "Gaming rant!" Today's topic of entertainment is "Dating and Games"

-------

If you're like me, you've probably dated a few gamer guys... Those men who impress us gamer ladies with their skills, prowess and keen insight into gaming. There's a certain sex appeal to men who are both good at what they play AND humble about it.

The hum of the CPU, the glow of the LCD fans on the board, and the dark room... come on its downright sexy.

Now I knwo what you're thinking... what if the guy isn't... you know... model material? For most gamer girls it isn't about physical appeal, its about the chemistry and the personality. Dont beleive me?

Who's the most charismatic gamer guy you know...
Now does he have a girlfriend?

Right.

I've dated my fia rshare of gamer geeks... the sexies tthing about them is that giant throbbing mass of tissue in their heads. If you can out talk, out walk and out wit (and out awp) me you're on my datable list. Not enough guys put stock into their ability to be sexy. ALL guys clean up well, they just need to knwo how... More men need to be just a touch more metro.. and I ONLY mean a touch. Lets not get all Queer eye for the computer guy or anything...

Once a gamer guys has got a chick though its important to remember a few rules.

1-We ARE more important then your damn computer
2-/camp is an important thing to learn
3-If we're playing a new game, dont let us win, but dont bash our heads into the floor either.
4-Dont pout if we beat you
5-Taking us out is important (ie dinner, the arcade, movies)
6-Sure we're one of the guys, but we want you to remember we're women and we like to be treated as such once in a while
7-Have you told us how hot we are lately? Because if you haven't you need to.
8-Taking us for granted will get you replaced
9-Dont just be our friend, be our BOYFRIEND
10-Encourage us to be who we want to be, women dont get enough of that kind of support.

Sure we're gamers, but sometimes we like to be girls as well... we like to dress up, to impress... well.. YOU! Notice the little things, not just "Nice shoes, wanna...."

FOr instance... While I was in colleg I dated a guy who was... VERY into EQ. He was so into EQ that he stopped noticing my existance. SO instead of nagging him or pulling the plug on his game (bc hey that'd incite ME to violence) I decided to press in full school girl regalia.

I sauntered into his dorm room, threw off my coat and sat right in his unsuspecting lap and gave hima kiss on the cheek.

He continued his game without any notice... I got off of him and left the room. The relationship didn't last much longer...

Granted thats an extremem example, but you get the picture...

Now on the other side of the coin, playing games can indeed be a turn on (and I'm not talking cheesy cyber sex either thank you)

Counter strike or any FPS's are well known for their varied shit-talking both online and off. Most gamer women can hold their own and know that frequently insults are considered terms on endearment int he gamer community... Often (or so it has been my experience) gamers express insults to each other as a form of comroderie.

While dating a different gyu in college I got into counter-strike and found myself attracted to one of the much more skilled players. He both cheered me on and provided a challenge for me.

Later on down the line he and I played at LAN centers and I found myself (after MUCH practice) being a better player, being both entertained and strangely turned on by the banter... It would result in a lasting relationship.

Who knew right?

I've actually known a few girls, who were gamers, to be aroused by a good raid, or even a challenging match over a driving game. Most women are attracted to, as mentioned earlier, skill and humility. Girls aren't looking for the OMG I PWNZORED J00R 455!!! players, but instead the smarter more refined gamers, knowing when to taunt and when to let go of the aggro...

Just my buck .25

miragel: Halo - how it can improve your grades!

A while back, I made a post on some different weird topics that I thought I'd expand on in the fufure. THe majority of them are personal experiences I've had, and involve games and RL in some interesting fashion.

I think it was Saxy who asked "How can Halo improve my grades?" and so, that will be the first one I will tell...

------------------

As most women gamers can attest to, college is a unique and fun time filled with late nights of gaming, and finally settling into your role as awell respected female gamer. It's a good tiem for us, the RPGs go to dawn, you can con folks into bringing you food from the Dinning COmmons while on a raid on an MMO and occasionally you can sucker your non-gamer girl roommate into playing puzzle games or fighting games.

My Senior year of college was filled with counter-strike, Halo, and Dungeon Siege... (one of these things is NOT like the other...) It was a year of FPS's for me, I played on the school LAN and enjoyed fragging here and there and throwing the witty banter on voice.

Halo on the other hand was a relatively new beast to me... THe thought of trying to headshot people witha bulky X-box controller was not one I relished... several times I fell victim to the "if I wave my controller around Mario will jump" syndrome. But after many nights across the hall in the "boys" suite, I got my coordination down and began the learning process of knowing the maps, gettign a feel for which weapon was best and learning the halo lingo.

Each game has a lingo, it an undeniable fact... If you're a Day Of Defeat player for instance, and you suddenly start talking to a Rainbow Six player... well.. its sort of like American and Britigh English. We're talking the same language, but the slang is ENTIRELY different. It takes a few games to get up to speed, and well.. does anyone like to ask "Wait, what does pwn mean and why is ther a flashing green thing on my shoulder? Is it a spider?"

No one want's to be that guy...

So I had been playing Halo for some time that Fall Semester, oddly enough it was about that time I needed to take a physics class I had been ignoring for the last 3 years. I hate physics, I've hated it since High School when I was forced to take it by my dad who thought it would do me some good or soemthing... A lot of good it did, it's sole purpose was to lower my GPA. I'm not very good with math, and yet now as an adult I'm in an accounting position... Irony enjoys sitting on my lap and molesting me.

One of the regular Halo players I hung out with had heard I was taking physics and naturally asked how it was going.

My head slammed into the dinning commons table, next to my rasberry ice tea and chicken ranch snadwich. "I... hate... physics..." I grumbled into the table.
He Pat me on the head. "It's okay Jules, I'll help you with it if you like, its just conceptual right?"
I nodded and sat back up. "No dude, you just dont understand, I cannot do math, and I cannot do the physics thing."
He just smiled and said "Next time we play Halo I'll show you."
I cocked my head to the side and looked at Justin... "This isn't another 'for every headshot take a shot' things is it?"
He laughed and shook his head, "Nah, that didn't turn out so well last time... I'm seriously pretty good with physics."
"But you're a poly sci major" I looked at him witha raised eyebrow.
"Hey, Im equal oppertunity, just bring your book ok?"

Sure enougha couple days later we were all in the guys suite playing Halo and Justin stood up, announcing to everyone that we were gona have a physics lesson to help me with my issues in class, the guys all kind of looked at me and put their controllers down, nodding and giving Justin the floor.

We loaded up Sidewinder and sure enough his little guy jumped into the warthog... That day I watched the warthog go through some.. interesting manuvers, over cliffs and demonstrart several of newtons laws... We went over the book as the rest of the guys enjoyed a good laugh over the whole thing...

And you know what?

When test day came, I remembered the concepts and the formulas and passed the class witha B, a personal accomplishment from someone who still cant calculate terminal velocity... If it hadn't been for Halo and their oh so fun physics engine, well... I dont think that core requirement would have been a single semester class...

seattleotaku: A classic moment

Last weekend, a conversation with Mom switched briefly to gaming, since we walked into a bookstore next to a game store. It went something like this:
MOM: Oh come on! Aren't you getting too old for that? You've outgrown video games.
ME: Okay, just a sec. I'll show you something. (Walks to an aisle two aisles away.)
(MOM follows, eyes rolling.)
ME: Here it is. (Hands MOM a game guidebook.)
MOM: "Myst V"? I'd have to start "Riven" over again, but yeah, I liked those.
ME: Ever get "too old" for them?
MOM: (Sighs, handing the book back, smiling.) You got me.
Never to old for fun.  ^_^

miragel: I like to watch.....

SO I was sitting there watchign my roommate play Ninga Gaiden, which really is a pretty cool ame to watch on account of all the awesome flips and whatnot.

I've always beena fan of watchign games, and I was curious is everyone else on here was to. Sure its fun to play a Final Fantasy, but its also a good time being the "cheerleader" or coach as much as I detest using those terms :P

I remember watching my ex-bf play through all of FF9 and then I tried picking it up and it just wasn't the same... *shrug*

Does anyone else like watching games?

I mean sometimes its nice to cuddle up with your boy or girl and enjoy a good TBS or RPG. THats the nice thing about consoles that PC games will never be able to touch... the "cuddle" factor. I bet thats something most marketing gurus haven't considered...

miragel: *listening to the GT.com Interview* TEABAGGING!

I'm listening to the interview that WUG's GiG girls had... you can find it http://www.gamertagradio.com <-there.

It's nice to hear all the girls' voices, and to get an idea of what they sound like. first off GJ girls!!

I'm curious though... are we a clan? I mean there's sort of this assumption by the GT interviewers that GiG is a competing clan... uhmm... I didn't think that we were. COuld someone clarify that?

Maybe here's a better question- what is WUG and GiG's mission statement? I knwo that's really horribly corporate of me to ask.. but perhaps we need some clarification.

Here's a few random examples.. mission statements are beter the shorter they are. (for instance Disney is "the happiest place on earth")

WUG - Proving to the world that Women do in fact PWN.
WUG - Not just a bunch of pretty faces.

Watch Us Game exists to provide support to other female gamers out there who know what its like to be ripped on by disbelieving guys.

Ever beaten a guy, and then gotten booted from the server? Watch Us Game knows how it is. Come join other ladies in gaming who know you're not a haxxor for having an extra X chromosome.

Female games are NOT a myth, they have a home, at watchusgame.com

HEADSHOTS - not just for guys anymore.

You've been teabagged by a chick. - WatchUsGame.com

Think girls cant step up to the console? Well come watch us! (www.watchusgame.com)

anywho, I finished listening to the interview, and I'd like to hi five whomever teabags ppl...
GJ!

Some of the above are sillier then others, but you get the point... Its important to WUG to take a direction. Are we showcasing women? Are we providing a community? a refuge? Are we reviewing games from the girls perspective? Are we a clan? Are we all of the above?

These things are certainly NOT for me to decide and honestly I'd like to send flowers to whomever has to decide all that nonsense... BUT I do think its important that we make it clear we aren't in fact a cam site... and we aren't sponsored by microsoft as someone pointed out on my blog... I knwo thes ethings are being worked on, and I've got TOTAL faith in the decision makers, I just want to try adn help along the way :D

miragel: Cam whores and other rants

So I've got some time b4 my modeling shoot this morning, and I thought I might muse for a bit.

*sigh*

I know that the Blonde FAnAtIc chic has kind of been unettling to many of us. I just wanted to post up here, that while I know many of us would probably like to flame her into the ground *raises hand*, its important to remember why we're all here. To represen the community and so it with the grace and flare that each and every one of us has.

Whats the solution for all of this?

Postitive PR. Perhaps we can counter our image witha PR campaign... I'm sure many of you have heard of the webcomic Penny Arcade, and if you haven't, you should read it, its really funny. (www.pennyarcade.com) anywho, a couple years back they started a donation thing during the holidays called child's play. The idea was that readers could buy games or give money to the organization and children in hospitals would get the games/toys as gifts for the holidays. It was a resounding success.

My suggestion is thus- redo the website design (which is already underway I think?) and make it more "professsional" (I have no idea wtf that means but I've seen posts saying the site looks n00b-like... I tend to disagree, but thats me.) and then launcha massive effort to bring us into a positive light. Bring more girls onboard, and especially encourage the shy ones...

Things I think that might be causng problems...
- THe name "Watch us Game" while I otally understand why it was picked, when Balgosa first showed me the ite, I thought it was a live vid cam site that allowed guys to watch chicks play video games... *shakes head* bad Mira, I know but it was my first impression. I was horribly wrong lol- but I was gonna join in anyways... even if it was a cam site.. hehe.
- The bar of women up top that moves- it shows the hottest chicks, the most professional pix, and while yes its a good face, its misleading to the average visitor.
- the WUG girls need their own private forums (and so does GiG in my opinion) to have their own space.

The community is so great and so full of amazing women that I desperately want to see it make it to the top...

Which brings me to my next point.

I was driving home from the mall yesterday after desperately tryign to find bathing suits. (my shoto today requires 4 bikinis, adn I found ONE store in TWO malls in vegas with anything @ all.. ugh... *grumbles*) anywho... I was thinking-

"Are there any famous female gamers?"

I couldn't think of ANY. none.

"But are there any famous MALE gamers?"

Vin Diesel (omfg I love this man...)
Fatal1ty (his company made my mother board)
and heck, we see guys playing video games ALL the time!! MTV cribs for example, every famous guy you see has got a "game room" with all of the consoles... well where are all the ladies at!?!?!

If I could wish ONE thing for WUG it would be to move up in the media to the point of status where other people could answer the questions - "who's a famous girl gamer?"

Alright, I've got to go now, but know that I love you all dearly, and I've got your backs. ;)
